Founded in 2003 by Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, and operating under Dwindle Distribution (also home to Blind Skateboards and Darkstar Skateboards), Almost Skateboards are renowned for their colourful graphics and light-hearted take on skateboarding.
In 2004, Almost made their video debut with Round Three (a nod to the Rodney vs Deawon saga which began while both founders rode for World Industries some years prior) featuring Chris Haslam, Cooper Wilt, Ryan Sheckler, Greg Lutzka, Rodney and
Deawon. Incorporating comical animations and an upbeat soundtrack, Round Three showcased crafted a whimsical yet progressive image which Almost has retained throughout their following productions such as 5-incher (2012) and 3AM (2017). Although, the best example of Almost’s ‘Have Fun, Skate Everything’ mentality is 2006’s Cheese and Crackers – a 15 minute opus featuring Deawon Song and Chris Haslam accomplishing the unthinkable on a mini-ramp.
It’s safe to say Almost Skateboards capture the childish of joy first discovering skateboarding and their collaborations with many classic cartoons in recent years further the brand’s capacity to bring back fond memories. From Dick Dastardly of Wacky Races to the cherished Hanna Barbera characters of Tom & Jerry, Topcat, Captain Caveman, Droopy and Yogi The Bear – it’s unlikely there’s an Almost board out there not featuring a character you spent hours mesmerised by as a kid. Furthermore, Almost’s on going collaborations with DC Comics has placed Batman, Superman, The Flash, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, The Joker and all manner of comic book icons on Almost boards.
Bearing in mind the progression Rodney and Daewon are responsible for it’s also befitting the brand are one most innovative companies when it comes to skateboard construction. Alongside traditional seven ply maple, Almost offers boards featuring fewer layers plywood with Uber Light construction and Impact Support which utilizes carbon fibre to reinforce areas of a deck which are prone to snapping.
